The anniversary of this tragic event was on Nov 14, 2013 this year by the lunar calendar. In the 10th day of the month of Muharram (Lunar Arabic month) on a day called Ashur, The Lunar year is 10 days shorter than the Sun year, next year the day of Ashura most likely fall on Nov 04, 2014 and so on The 12er (Athna Ashari) Shia Muslims all over world commemorate and mourn and remember this tragedy and most important to remember the message and the school of thought of Imam Hussain. One of the many important teachings of Imam Hussain is as he told the army of Yazid
"if you do not have religion at least be of free men" free from serving tyranny and oppression for money and benefits and worldly gains and to have a clear conscience. The other message of Imam Hussain is not to allow anyone to oppressor you and not to oppress and not to collaborate with the oppressors. The other message of Imam Hussain is to stand for the truth even if all the odds are against you. Imam Hussain symbolizes courage, truthfulness, being anti tyranny and injustice, love and devotion towards the creator. Imam Hussain symbolizes the victory of blood over sword.
Imam Hussain teaches humanity on how to be victorious even when you are being oppressed.
The spirit of the revolution of Imam Hussain in Karbala will remain alive until the appearance of Mahdi.

Right after events of Karbala every Arab and non Arab tyrants of each era tried to put out the light of Imam Hussain by targeting the mourning ceremonies of Imam Hussain or those who attend the ceremonies of Imam Hussain and by working against the school of thought and ideology of Imam Hussain. Most of the Arab "Muslim" caliphates since the events of Karbala until now have tried to stop the message of Imam Hussain from spreading. The dictator Shah of Iran Reza Pahlavi made it illegal for Shia's to mourn for Imam Hussain in a country that are 98% Shia Muslims, before the beginning of world war 2. Saddam was another one who was dead set against mourning ceremonies of Imam Hussain and would kill and persecuted those who attended such ceremonies. Israeli patrol opened fire on the civilians who were mourning for Imam Hussain in their Mosque and killed thousands with out any reason or provocation when they had occupied south of Lebanon before Hezbollah was born in 1982. Taliban in Afghanistan would kill and prosecute Shia's for attending mourning ceremonies of Imam Hussain. Every year in Pakistan and Iraq Al Qaida kills Shia's for attending the mourning ceremonies of Imam Hussain. In Bahrain and Saudi Arabia the dictators in power kill and prosecute the Shia's for attending the ceremonies of Imam Hussain. The message that every day is Ashura and every land is Karbala means this battle and struggle between truth and evil exists today, the question is where do you stand in this struggle?!
